Mathmatics

Mathematics 5-8 grade

The Saxon Math program was chosen for the math curriculum. This text has had proven success with children of diverse backgrounds. It’s based on two important concepts: incremental development of skills and continual practice. Concepts are presented in small, readily understood pieces that are developed over time. Fundamental skills and concepts are practiced and reviewed daily throughout the year. Continual practice provides the time and experiences necessary for concepts to be a part of students’ long term learning. The Saxon approach is often summarized in these terms: “Time After Time; Step By Step; Over and Over; Year by Year.” The program’s attention to incremental development fits well with the school’s focus on incorporating students’ prior knowledge as a basis for future knowledge acquisition. The structure of Saxon lessons, which maximizes the time students spend working on problems, supports Sankofa’s emphasis on learning by doing.

Mathematics 9-12 grade

Sankofa will offer a range of math electives, including algebra, geometry, calculus, and statistics. Advanced Placement options will be available as needed either as tutorials or as full time classes.
