West Chester, PA - Every day is special at Sankofa Academy Charter School. Students receive daily instruction on character development, participate in exciting classes that help prepare them for college, learn about the stock market and just have fun participating in activities like chess club and African drumming. But Friday, September 23, 2011 was even more exciting than usual. We had a visit from Carolyn Comitta who spoke to the students about her role as the first female mayor of West Chester. She was joined by State Senator Andrew Diniman, who has visited Sankofa in the past and has become one of our supporters. Visits by two government officials in one day would be considered extraordinary, but Sankofa students were invited to help celebrate Ms. Pennsylvania’s birthday.

Amber Joi Watkin’s, the current Miss Pennsylvania greeted the students with a million dollar smile and words of wisdom about the importance of staying in school and doing well. The afternoon culminated with the presentation of a check donated by the owner of Culinary Deliveries and a fantastic magic show that still has students asking, “how did he do that”?
