Nguzo Saba Purpose and Principles
The Nguzo Saba are principles used to foster balance in the individual, or community. Intellectual and Emotional maturity through balanced principles can bring positive outcomes and behaviors in various communities.
Nguzo Saba Principles
1. Kujichagulia- (Self Determination) Projects self-esteem, self-respect and self-worth which leads to confidence, pride, leadership and fellowship
2. Nia- (Purpose) Projects self-discipline which leads to productivity, self-motivation and recognition of destructive forces
3. Ujima- (Collective Work and Responsibility) Projects responsibility to self and others which leads to teamwork, dependability, problem solving, and collectivism
4. Ujamaa- (Cooperative Economics) Projects Economic sensibility which leads to being self-sufficient and group interdependence
5. Kuumba- (Creativity) Projects Innovative thinking and enhanced perception which leads to critical thinking, self-expression, aesthetic appreciation, and imagination
6. Umoja- (Unity) Projects family kinship and sense of belonging which leads to social stability, accountability, hospitality, recognition of authority, and respect for others
7. Imani- (Faith) Projects morality which leads to resilience, self-confidence, and increased faith in others
